Joanne Faux Knit Wrap Dress by Sinclair Patterns

Another test* and another great dress to come out of it with the Joanne Faux Knit Wrap Dress by Sinclair Patterns. This pattern company has steadily become a favourite of mine due to a great fit straight up and the fact that the garments are actually in rotation in my wardrobe.

The Joanne dress is fitted at the bodice with a faux wrap and a pleated accent to one side seam. The skirt pattern is available as a knee or midi length flared skirt and there is also the option of a top with an overlapped peplum. Sleeve lengths available are short, 3/4, long or elbow length and also a flounce variation and not to forget a sleeveless offering which also has a different cutting line for the armhole so the fit is spot on. If you love a dress with pockets, they are also an option, along with a belt/tie.

Fabric recommendations are a light to medium weight knit and for mine a chose an abstract brown spot rayon knit (97% rayon/3% spandex). I found the stretch and weight perfect for my sleeveless midi dress version. If your fabric isn’t as co-operative, instructions are provided for stabilising shoulder, waist and pockets seams. I chose the regular length pattern, although petite and tall options are available, along with all the other benefits of good PDF patterns.

Construction is actually quite quick with this dress, I’d say maximum 2 hours. The neckline isn’t too revealing either which I like. I’m really happy with the fit and didn’t make any alterations to the dress, even omitted my normal sway back. Although I made this as a summer version, I can layer it with a long sleeve top underneath to get me through the colder months.

The Joanne Dress is on sale currently for $7.99 through until 25th September!

Mirri Wrap Dress by Wardrobe by Me

The Mirri Wrap Dress** by Wardrobe by Me Patterns has been popular over the sewing web however it recently underwent a re vamp with an increase in the size range (US 0-24 & EU 30-54) and improved instructions and I was happy to be part of the testing process*.

The Mirri dress is body-hugging with a faux wrap bodice and a shawl-like classic collar. The neckline is a modest V and the skirt is fitted through the high hip area and flared at the hem. The pattern comes with four length options, blouse, knee, mid calf and maxi length.

I made the mid calf length using black and multi cheetah rayon knit (95% rayon/5% elastane). I had some head scratching to do when it came to creating the pleats on the bodice at first, not sure why I was so perplexed when really it is explained well in the instructions, but I think I was folding the wrong way initially. The shawl collar also requires some concentration to ensure the fabrics are facing the correct way, ensure you are focused at this point as it can get confusing but the finish is really nice. Or maybe it was confusing for me because this was a late night sew!

I’m so happy to have another dress in my wardrobe that is easy to wash and wear and feels great on. I think this is a very flattering style. Since I have made 2 faux wrap dresses quite close together I will change my focus for a bit. I have lots still to blog about and lots of sewing to do as my stash shrinking is not going to well and I had a big buying month in March. More on that at a later date.

MRT Faux Wrap Dress by 1 Puddle Lane

I get excited when a tester call goes out for a designer who’s patterns I have purchased in the past and have made a few versions that I wear often. When Ann posted a call for the MRT Faux Wrap Dress test* I was chuffed to be involved. I have the Miss Ruby Tuesday (MRT) and thought the fit of the faux wrap dress may be similar.

The MRT Faux Wrap Dress is a knee-length dress with a crossover front, with or without side tucks.  It is fitted at the bust, waist and high hip and looser over the hip. Although this is a sleeveless pattern there is a “sleeved” and “extended shoulder” template from the original MRT and the add-on pattern. The pattern is offered in sizes 2XS–6XL.

I chose to make my version without the side tucks using some kind of cotton spandex (unknown composition). Sewing the pattern is pretty straightforward with clear instructions and nice finishing techniques using bands for the neckline and armholes. This is a quick sew, especially if you have sewn the MRT previously and don’t have any fit issues.

The fit is exactly as described with a fitted upper bodice and more room around the hips, perfect for my pear shape really. I’m looking forward to making the side tucks version, I think it will be more forgiving after a big meal, or perhaps I need to use a busier fabric.

Don’t miss out on adding this pattern to your library. The MRT Faux Wrap Dress, along with all other patterns are 20% off until Sunday 31st March with a coupon code which you can get by joining the 1PL-Sewing and Pattern Studio Facebook group.
